May 8: ‘Mothers of the Church’

Mothers of the Church’ is our Mother’s Day topic. Join us on Mother’s Day morning, May 8, for the 10:30 worship service as we explore the role of women in the early Christian church, whose voices had been suppressed in the biblical canon and early Christian history. In his sermon “Mothers of the Church,” based on the work of feminist biblical scholar Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza and her classic book, In Memory of Her. David Horst, Minister, reconstructs the role of women before Christianity became a male-dominated, imperial religion.

Robin Slaw, Director of Lifespan Faith Development, tells a story about “all kinds of mamas.” Music provided by Matt Anderson, Director of Music. Pre-K to grade 5 children, parents, and caregivers join us for the beginning of the service in the Sanctuary, then depart for Family Worship in the Assembly Room. Grades 6/7 Building Bridges and 8/9 Coming of Age classes meet as scheduled. Coffee and refreshments follow the morning programs.

The Adult Faith Development program, Parents and Caregivers as Sexuality Educators with Robin Slaw, begins at noon. Childcare for infants and toddlers provided until 1:30.
