Social Action

The Social Action Team educates the congregation on current social justice issues and helps CUC address social justice issues and needs of the greater community through a range of programs and projects.  These vary with the season and the needs of the greater community around us, but typically include:

Bountiful Garden

Our organic garden on church property raises hundreds of pounds of vegetables and salad-makings for the Center for Food Action, which works to prevent hunger and homelessness and to improve the lives of individuals and families living in poverty in northeastern New Jersey.

Social Justice Film Series

Our film series educates the congregation on such issues as immigrant justice, racism, health care, campaign finance, homelessness, hunger and environmental justice.

Teens Talk About Racism

CUC helped found this annual daytime conference for high school students at Fairleigh Dickinson University and supports it through fundraising and congregational leadership.

Charitable Partnerships

The Social Action team provides liaison and fundraising support to to local groups serving complementary missions, including the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition, Bergen County Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, North Jersey Sanctuary Committee and Martin Luther King Jr Birthday Committee.  We also provide an annual dinner for 150 homeless and food-insecure people in support of the Bergen County Department of Health and Human Services.

UU Legislative Ministry

CUC participates in the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of New Jersey, which coordinates grassroots advocacy and works to establish public policy that is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles and purposes.
