Join us for Volunteer and Leadership Sunday, January 10, at 10:30 a.m. David Horst, Minister, Robin Slaw; Director of Lifespan Faith Development; and Charlie O’Reilly, Worship Associate, lead a service focusing on congregational volunteering and leadership in conjunction with the Volunteer Fair. In his 1994 autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela gave us a biblical metaphor of “leading from behind.” He wrote, “A leader is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.” Some call this the “servant leader” model of leadership in which leaders identify the needs of their team and allow individuals to make the best use of their gifts and talents. Successful servant leaders also know how to lead by example and exemplify the organizational culture. On this Volunteer and Leadership Sunday, Rev. Horst applies this model to all levels of congregational volunteering and leadership in his sermon “Leading from Behind.” Robin tells the story of the American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and leading figure of the early women’s rights movement Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
